It is inevitable in this day and age for software as well as games to be leaked on the Internet earlier than their official release date due to the carelessness on the part of the developer or snitching employees who decided that their Christmas bonus (or rather, the lack of it) just wasn’t good enough an effort by the company to keep them going for another year. There are a 1,001 explanations for a leak, but I guess most people are not interested in the “how” but would rather just play around with the leaked software itself. The latest victim to fall to piracy of the digital kind and leaks is none other than Windows 7 Beta, according to searches at some BitTorrent sites today.

Those who frequent the Pirate Bay BitTorrent site would be able to find two Windows 7 Build 7000 listings that were posted last Friday, and depending on the type of connection you have, thousands and even millions of interested folks could have had installed Windows 7 on their experimental computer by now already. On Saturday afternoon itself, a single torrent on Pirate Bay revealed over 1,800 “seeders”, alongside 8,500 “leechers” that are propagating and receiving the disk image of the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate, Build 7000, respectively. These are not hard and fast numbers, but more or less a general consensus of user comments and various Internet sources.

The beta build has been listed as a 2.44GB download, making many of us wonder whether netbooks will be powerful enough to run Windows 7 smoothly with the limited processing power and memory. For those who stay away from torrent sites, they can always keep their fingers crossed the Microsoft will keep to their promise of opening the beta to all users early next year without mentioning an exact release date, although latest information published on its own site does point toward a pre-January 13 release.
