Creative’s Videophone leaked by Uncle Sam
Whether by accident or design, the FCC has apparently leaked details on Creative’s new videophone. Looking more like a calculator with an LCD screen, the design is apparently geared as a wireless video conferencing solution. Specs include a 7-inch LCD which displays a healthy 16.7 million colors to display it’s SIP supported H.264 video thanks to it’s TI DaVinci graphics chipset. Also included are76 degree wide VGA camera, dual microphones, a 2 hour battery for portable use, and both 802.11b/g WiFi and Ethernet for connectivity.
But the question is, why?
We live in a world where video conferencing is as easy as a webcam and Skype account. If Creative has been waiting for technology to catch up, it’s apparently passed them buy for the geek crowd – except for one feature – the ability to route the video signal through your TV set, which not only increases battery life to 5 hours, but is downright way cool a concept. And for the flashing clock on the VCR crowd, the videophone may be an interesting gadget if it isn’t too expensive.
And if Creative can keep the pricepoint down to under $200, it may not be such a wacky idea afterall.
Especially if they can shrink it down to wrist size so we can all fulfill that Dick Tracy fantasy.
