We’re not going to say that it happens all the time, but it’s not impossible, either. What are we talking about? We’re talking about finding a phone that, for all intents and purposes, many would consider a rip-off of a “larger brand” that is actually good. In this case, we have the G-Fone G588, which looks shockingly like a BlackBerry Curve 8900, minus the trackball. Unfortunately, there’s nothing really disappointing about this handset that would make us want to shun it for its striking similarities.

And maybe you’re one of the people out there that wants to have a dual SIM BlackBerry device. We don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon, so you should probably lose all hope. But! If you happen to be in India, or are travelling to India any time soon, here’s your next best thing: a device that can run on either a CDMA or GSM network, has a full QWERTY keyboard, an FM radio, Opera Mini pre-loaded, 1.3MP camera, a MicroSD card slot for expandable memory, and social network integration provided by Nimbuz. It’s got a 2.2″ QVGA display, Bluetooth connectivity, and an MP3 player.

Like we said, there’s nothing terrible about this device. It’s actually not that bad at all. Sure, it doesn’t have the BlackBerry logo on it, but to some people out there, that may not matter. And if you’re in India, this does look like a great option. Of course, if some other rumors are true, maybe you should hold off for a bit longer.

I believe that the ultimate goal of environmentalists is to have all of our buildings be completely independent from “the grid”. In other words, through the use of sustainable resources, buildings will have all the power they need without the power company.

This building, known as the Strata Building, is one step in the right direction. The Strata, also known as the Razor, has three giant turbines on its 42nd story top. These blades are in the building facade and can generate eight percent of the building’s energy use.

In other words, it is a building with windmills on top. A lot of homes have chosen to have windmills in order to generate power, but they usually only end up being energy efficient if you get all the wind you need. In the case of the Strata, they are capable of generating 50MWh of electricity each year, which is not bad, even if it is less than ten percent.

My source was quick to point out that the Strata must not be put in the way of other buildings. I mean, how would you like to design a building with wind turbines and then put it in the middle of a city so the wind can’t get to it? Why is it that I can totally see a city planning committee making just such a mistake?

We shouldn’t be surprised that there’s a ridiculous amount of Windows Phone 7 Series information coming out, considering the MIX10 event is still going on. But this is almost ridiculous, now. As we’ve previously seen, LG already has a handset marked for the Windows Phone 7 Series treatment, but if this image you’re seeing now is meant to be believed, then it looks like the company does indeed have another device in the works.

As you can see, it’s not the Panther, which was originally unveiled a few weeks ago, and then shown off again at MIX10 on Monday, alongside the unnamed Samsung device. The image itself originally appeared on the site Neowin, but has been pulled as of this writing. That could be for a lot of different reasons, but it could be mainly for the reason that the device is real, and a ways away from being launched. Or, it could very well be that it’s fake. (Though, we’ve seen a lot worse fan renders.)

As for details about the device, those are few and far between at this point. It’s said to have a full QWERTY (physical) keyboard, which is reminiscent of the Panther. It’s also got a 800×480 pixel resolution for the touchscreen. Our main question, is why LG would be releasing two devices with a hardware, slide-out keyboard. Options are great, but if you make the options too similar to one another, what’s the point? We’re not sure if we’re counting this for a real device yet or not. It makes perfect sense that the manufacturer would have more devices being created, so it’s perfectly possible that this was a legitimate leak. As soon as more information comes our way, we’ll pass it along.

Having been introduced at CES earlier this January, the
Cernium-developed Archerfish Solo is actually a compact, wireless, IP video camera that was specially designed for homes and small business, boasting the brains to look out for stuff that matters to you. It is smart enough to differentiate between events that matter to you, including your merry bunch of kids arriving home from school safely, as well as identifying potential break-ins, where all these will be sent to your cellphone or email account.
Instead of leaving these balls of light attached to their tree-like fixture, you can pop them off of the tree. Then just lay them about the house wherever you could use a little bit of a soft glow to go along with your usual décor. You can turn all of the squishy balls on or just a couple at a time, just depending on how much light you need.

It appears that the tree will give them a charge and when they’re fully charged can be plucked off and used elsewhere. They’re made out of soft silicone, so they’ll probably be alright if they roll off the table on occasion. The design was done for Julien Bergignat and have actually been picked up by a French manufacturer, but there’s no word on availability or pricing just yet.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot that goes into selling a mobile phone. (Or anything, for that matter.) And the truth of the matter is, it doesn’t matter how fantastic your device may be; if you don’t try to sell the thing, it’s not going to sell. We’ve seen the same results from other companies and other devices, but it’s a big shock to us here at SlashPhone to see a device like the Nexus One doing so poorly. There’s several reasons why it’s happening, but still, it leaves us leaving a little queasy.

A report from Flurry, an analytics company that’s provided us with previous Nexus One information, states that the initial 74-day sales of the Nexus One have been next to abysmal, especially when compared to the original Apple iPhone and the Motorola Droid. That 135,000 may seem like a big number to a lot of people, especially in just 74 days, but the iPhone did 1 million units sold in 74 days. And the Droid? The other Android-powered handset, which is currently offered up by the Verizon Wireless network, sold a shocking 1.05 million handsets in 74 days. So, you see, Google has missed the mark with the Nexus One, and in the biggest way possible: marketing.

When compared to the marketing barrage that occurred with the original iPhone, and especially with the Droid, there’s no surprise that the Nexus One is failing in this regard. Here at SlashPhone, we can’t even honestly say that we’ve ever seen a Nexus One commercial on the TV. (It’s true, though, that we don’t watch much TV.) Yes, there are a lot of Google-centric Nexus One advertisements while you surf the Internet, but that’s not enough for the average consumer to purchase the device. And while many would paint the exclusive launch deal with T-Mobile USA another contributor of this failure, we’re not of the same mind. It would have helped them to have sold the device in T-Mobile USA stores, and that’s the bottom line.

On one last point, we have to play the Devil’s advocate with this. While we agree with everyone else in saying that 135,000 units sold in 74 days isn’t good at all, we’re also going to point out that Google didn’t market the Google Phone. In fact, it seems that Google was more interested in marketing their digital phone store, rather than the phone itself. So, yes, sales aren’t as high as the two most advertised devices in recent memory, but is that really shocking? Marketing vs no marketing has a distinct, clear winner, and that’s not a mystery to anyone.
